Fantasy sports leagues have been in the news lately, and not in a good way. There have been scandals involving "insider trading," and Nevada is in the process of classifying fantasy sports as gambling. So what should you do if the Feds shut down your fantasy sports league? Try fantasy physics instead!
Here's how it works. Every participant in your league gets to draft five physicists. Over the course of the calendar year, each physicist accumulates "points" according to the following schedule:
+1 point: Each presentation of a colloquium or seminar
+2 points: Each invited talk at an international conference
+5 points: Each published paper
+10 points: The physicist is promoted to associate or full professor
+20 points: Receipt of an award from the American Physical Society
+100 points: Nobel Prize
-0 points: An error is discovered in one of the physicist's published papers (hey, it happens all the time)
-50 points: Major scandal (use your imagination)
Then at the end of the year, each participant in the league totals up all of the points from his team of physicists, and the person with the most points wins. I believe this has the potential to be every bit as exciting as fantasy football, or at least as exciting as fantasy women's field hockey.
